JD McPherson is an artist with an unaffected take on vital American music and a voice that channels the spirit of Little Richard and James Brown. McPhersons seductively kickass album, SIGNS & SIGNIFIERS, finds this renaissance man/hepcat seamlessly meshing the old and the new, the primal and the sophisticated, on a work that will satisfy traditional American rock 'n roll and R&B purists while also exhibiting McPhersons rarefied gift for mixing and matching disparate stylistic shapes and textures. Recorded at Hi-Style Studios in Chicago, IL.
Jake La Botz brings a lifetime of unconventional stories crackling to cinematic life on his new album They're Coming for Me. Produced by Jimmy Sutton (Pokey LaFarge, JD McPherson) at Hi-Style Studios, the record is an impressive showcase of La Botz' creative storytelling chops. Contemplative, spiritual, and often inclined toward the absurd, the album's 10 tracks include a tale written from the perspective of a bank robber moaning gospel hymns while barreling towards a grisly end, a hilarious, snarky riff from Bigfoot on his struggle to stay relevant amidst the modern 24-hour news cycle, and a recent Nashville transplant's observations on the everyday reality for working musicians in Music City. They're Coming For Me deftly ties threads from La Botz's background in Chicago blues, gospel, early rock 'n roll, American folksong traditions, and a dash of country twang into a grooving knot of warm-timbred Americana. The songs jump off the needle like the words of a profound and gripping American novel, deepening with each listen as layers of meaning unfold across a rich musical landscape.

Conjuring the dynamic energy of 80s neo-rockabilly bands like The Shakin’ Pyramids, The Rockats, and The Stray Cats, the occult macabre of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, the avant-garde of early New Wave, and the outsider punk ethos of The Violent Femmes, Slink Moss Explosion’s spectral sounds will bring you a little closer to the otherworld. The origins of these neo-rockabilly mavericks can be traced to some 30-odd years ago in Hyde Park on Chicago’s Southside, when two young musicians took their rough-hewn love of underground rockabilly and polished it into a mystical diamond. Founded by Slink Moss (aka “Mr. Moss”) and veteran producer and musician Jimmy Sutton (aka “Mr. Bones”) of the JD McPherson Band, this sideband has grown into a venerable supergroup with the addition of ace guitarist Joel Paterson (“Mr. X”) and special guests Scott Ligon of NRBQ (“Von Tork”) and Alex Hall (“Mr. A”). Many years in the making, their new full-length record Floating Ghost Hotel includes freshly re-mastered favorites like the upbeat rockers “Honey Bee Bop” (which appears in the feature film Waitress) and “Pass It Around” as well as a handful of never-before-released songs recorded by Alex Hall at Sutton’s celebrated all-analog studio, Hi-Style Studios. But you’d be remiss to expect an easily classifiable record of straightforward rockabilly; the album’s twelve tracks include haunting ballads, blues boogies, and even a dash of post-punk and supernatural poetry. With Floating Ghost Hotel, Slink Moss Explosion has emerged from the shadows of legend and myth to divine with the rock ‘n roll gods and explode us into the future, one curious hip-shaker and spine-tingling howl at a time.

Over more than a quarter century, Emanuela Hutter, lead vocalist of the acclaimed Swiss Rock'n'Roll outfit Hillbilly Moon Explosion, has garnered a cult following across continents. Her distinct vocals reference Italian torch songs and showcase the infectious rawness of the Rock'n'Roll subculture. Goose Bumps is Hutter’s second solo release and was produced by Hi-Style Records’s Jimmy Sutton (JD McPherson, Pokey LaFarge, The Bellfuries). Sutton assembled an all star cast of musicians, including Alex Hall (engineer, drums) and Joel Paterson (guitar). Almost all recording was done live at the analog Hi-Style studio in Chicago. Bonafide contemporary rock star JD McPherson wrote “Everybody’s Valentine” for Hutter; it could easily find its way into the next Bond film. Emanuela’s influences draw from disparate historical musical threads like doo-wop, German punk, and classic country. From the balladry of “Monday Morning” to the punk-surf rock of “The Voices,” Hutter’s original songwriting shines throughout. Goose Bumps is a must listen for fans of modern rock with a classic twist.
